Fortigate Virtual Appliances

Here is some more information from Network World on the virtual appliances Fortinet is releasing.

  1. FGT_VM is up in the support area.
    Quick Setup guide says it needs a license file right away, but I haven't tried it yet.

  2. That is true. You cannot do anything with the device without licensing. In ESX or Workstation you can get to the console which will tell you to license the device.

  3. The VM is also with all the other binaries on the FTP site, "FGT_VM-v400-build0291-FORTINET.ovf.zip".
    REQUIREMENTS:
    • Supports VMware ESXi/ESX 4.0/4.1
    • 512 MB of RAM or higher
    • Minimum 2 virtual CPU's
    • Minimum 2 virtual NIC's
    • 32 gigabytes (GB) of available hard disk space for disk logging and WAN Optimization

  4. ..forgot to add. Don't get too excited, it's pricey. Licenses sold as three seperate "models".

    FortiGate:
    VM02 supports 2 CPU Cores @ $9,995
    VM04 supports 4 CPU Cores @ $14,995
    VM08 supports 8 CPU Cores @ $29,995

    FortiManager:
    VM5K @ $22,495

    We are expecting them to compete with the hardware models, since you lose some of the advantages of the FortiASICs that your 'homebuilt' hardware won't have. These are list prices, but even @ NFR it's no deal.
